My area of research is sociolinguistics. In my doctoral research, I undertook a sociolinguistic study of the Bengali diaspora in Kerala. This study contributes to the literature on diaspora studies pertaining to Indian languages in general and Bangla and Malayalam in particular and thus help explore this rather virgin field of contemporary Indian linguistics. It seeks to generate a model for sociocu ltural mapping of diasporic communities in the Indian scenario. The data and analysis provided in the chapter on the language used by the Bengal i Diaspora are expected to open ne w vistas of research in comparative linguistics with special reference to homonymy, phonological differences, semantic mutation, etc. in Bangla and Malayalam. Apart from this, I am also interested in sociociiltural studies vis-a-vis diasporas. I am also engaged in English language teaching, in course of which I study the influence of mother tongue on the learning by Indian students (mostly studying engineering) of English as a second language by India.
