Assistive Technology Lab (ATL)

About

Assistive Technology Lab (ATL) is the innovative initiative of Sri. K.V. Vishnu Raju, the Chairperson of Sri Vishnu Educational Society and was set up under the guidance of Prof. Alan Rux in collaboration with University of Massachusetts, Lowell, USA Started in 2009. ATL works for a unique and noble cause by designing projects that will make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities. This is a small but definite step to mainstream people with disabilities into society.

It is intended to be a real-time platform for the students to learn and experience the engineering design process, to apply their academic skills in a real-world context, and develop important workplace skills not usually taught in the classroom.

Objectives

  • To promote exposure to Assistive Technology, TSIC will issue Joint Certificates for the courses offered by Assistive Technology Center
  • Facilitate the innovation of faculty and students by way of idea validation, visibility, hackathons etc.
  • Facilitate faculty and students with Idea Validation, Innovation Mentoring, building collaborations, Prototype Building, and Supporting funding access
  • Identification of the development projects, fixation of time frame and allocation of resources Including financial to the extent of feasibility.
  • Students will have internship opportunities to carry out various objectives of TSIC in the areas of Assistive Technology and other projects.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

  • A team of 40 students and faculty from the Assistive Technology Lab participated in the Assistive Technology Summit 5.0, held at T-Works, organized by the Telangana State Innovation Cell (TGIC). As part of the summit, the students showcased two innovative projects aimed at enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
  • A team of students and faculty from the Assistive Technology Lab participated in the Assistive Technology Summit 4.0, organized by the Telangana State Innovation Cell (TGIC). The summit was held at T-Works, with project exhibitions conducted on 4th January 2024 at T-Hub, Hyderabad.

Internships Offered

  • Two students from NIT Mizoram successfully completed a 4-week internship at the Assistive Technology Lab, BVRIT Narsapur, from 7th June to 7th July 2024.

Awards

  • The Assistive Technology Lab at B V Raju Institute of Technology (BVRIT), Narsapur has been conferred with the prestigious Center of Excellence Award for the academic year 2023–24. This recognition is a testament to the lab’s outstanding contributions in the field of assistive technology, including innovation, student engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and impactful research and development aimed at empowering individuals with disabilities.

  • BV Raju Institute of Technology, Narsapur received the “Best Assistive Technology Initiative Among Educational Institutions ” given by  AssisTech Foundation (ATF) Awards 2023.

    The award is an appreciation of the outstanding work our organization has been doing in the Assistive Technology (AT) Ecosystem. 

  • Honorable Chairman Sri Vishnu Raju Garu has been awarded the prestigious “Honorary Fellow Award 2022” from the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America – RESNA for his contribution to the Assistive Technology domain over the years

Students Achievements

  • ATL students secured the 2nd Prize with a cash award of ₹25,000 for their project “Anvita Kriya” in the EMPOWER 2025 Student Design Challenge, held on 17th–19th October 2024 at the National Institute for Speech and Hearing (NISH), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.
  • ATL students won the 2nd Prize with a cash award of ₹40,000 for their project “Virtual Rehab (ViR)” and a Consolation Prize of ₹10,000 for the project “Smarna Siddhi” in the Impairathon 2024 Competition, jointly organized by the Karpagam Innovation and Incubation Council and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, KAHE, in association with Startup TN, STPI, TANCAM, and the Karpagam Innovation Centre.
  • The “Touching Math” project won the Runner-Up Prize at the Medical Technology Hackathon 2024, held at the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ), Visakhapatnam, from 4th to 7th April 2024.
  • The innovative project “Touching Math” was selected for presentation on the Startup Stage at BioAsia 2024, one of Asia’s premier life sciences and healthcare innovation forums. The event took place on 27th February 2024, bringing together thought leaders, innovators, startups, and industry experts from around the world.
  • ATL Student team won the 1st Prize of ₹30,000 for the project “Sparsha Dhwani” and a Consolation Prize of ₹5,000 for the project “Ride Sense” in the ANVESHANA 2024 Competition. These awards recognize the innovative solutions developed to address real-world challenges through assistive technology . 

  • Projects from the Assistive Technology Lab were selected for exhibition at Impulse 2024 – Social Entrepreneurship Summit, organized by Bala Vikasa Centre for Social and Responsible Business (CSRB) on 27th January 2024.
  • A student team is the finalist of Smart India Hackathon – 2023 and participated in the Grand Finale at Manav Rachana University, Faridabad from 19th -23rd Dec 2023.
  • ATL BVRIT Narsapur Projects are selected for IIC Regional Meet conducted by AICTE on 11th Dec 2023.
  • ATL BVRIT Narsapur Projects are exhibited at EDU summit 2023 on 7th Dec 2023. 
  • ATL BVRIT Narsapur two student teams won 1st prize and 2nd prize at ReHack 2023 a Rehabilitation Engineering Hackathon conducted by CMC Vellore from 4th Dec to 9th Dec 2023.
  • ATL BVRIT Narsapur two student innovations are exhibited at EMPOWER 2023 assistive technology conference conducted at IIT Madras Research Park on 5th, 6th Oct 2023.

  • ATL project Puff Mouse- An AAC Mouse won 2nd prize in Project Expo at the First International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems & Assistive Technologies 2022 (CPSAT 2022), on 23rd Sept 2022.

  • Assistive Technology Lab (ATL) Students G. Sevanth (CSM), K. Saiteja (BME), P. Rohan Raj (EEE), V. Tarun Shashank (Mech), and ATL faculty Rohith Sirpa participated in the BUILD Club Program conducted by IIT Madras Research Park on 17th & 18th June 2022 and subsequently started the Club in BVRITN in association with IITM.
  • ATL participated in ANVESHANA 2020, Science and Engineering Competition (24th to 26th Feb. 2020) along with Telangana Model School Jakkapally and won 3 prizes.
  • ATL project “Alternate Augmented Communication Device” won 1st prize of Rs. 30,000 cash prize.
  • ATL project “Smart Cradle” won 3rd prize of Rs. 20,000 cash prize.
  • ATL project “Fully automated Fish Feeding Device” won the consolation prize of Rs. 5,000 cash prize.

  • Assistive Technology Lab, BVRIT, Narsapur showcased four projects (Prosthetic Arm, Knee Brace, Augmentative and alternative communication Device and S-Cube) in the Assistive Technology Exhibition 2020 conducted by Telangana State Innovation Cell (TSIC) on 3 rd Dec. 2020. Learning Aids
Aakar VarnadyayAakar Varnadyay helps in learning the basic shapes and colors. This also has visual and auditory outputs to make it attractive to differently-abled children. 
Braille LearnerLearning the Braille script needs assistance and mentoring by specialists which is expensive and time-consuming. This prototype helps visually challenged to learn braille script. The braille keyboard developed is used for sending emails through mobile apps. 
Ganitha SahayaGanitha Sahaya is a math tool, which helps in learning the basic arithmetic operations. The interface of the device is designed for easy learning with visual and audio outputs.
Alternative/ Augmentative Communication
Puff MouseThis device is used to access laptops and mobiles through a joystick and sip/puff switch. 
Prosthesis & Orthosis
Below Elbow Prosthetic ArmThe prosthetic arm works on myoelectric signals. This also has sensory feedback for pressure and temperature.  
Knee BraceKnee joint lock is controlled in two ways, one through a mobile application, where the user can lock or unlock with a press of a single button or through a sensor which is available at the top of the knee brace with a single tap.
